As Managing Director of O’Mahony Pike Architects + Urban Designers, John has led the expansion of the practice to include offices in Cork and London. He also heads up the Green Energy Committee Suscom within the practice which is involved in ensuring the latest technological and legislative issues associated with sustainable design are understood and disseminated throughout the practice for the benefit of our clients. This group is also involved in green research projects and has completed one of the first A-rated housing developments in the country.
In 2004 John was responsible for the setting up of a permanent present in London. The practice is concentration in the UK market on the design and delivery of Mixed Use and Residential Projects, Hotel and Primary Healthcare and Urban Design Masterplanning work. Extensive experience in Ireland in the boom years, particularly in the design and delivery of large scale urban infill and extensions, is proving to be very beneficial in sourcing new opportunities in the UK.
In 1997 John assembled an Urban Design Regeneration team under the leadership of McCormac Jameson Prichard Architects, which successfully competed for appointment as Masterplanning Consultants for the Regeneration of Ballymun in North Dublin. Following the completion of this project in 1998, he headed up an Urban Design Team in OMP which has, over the past 10 years, informed decision-making on all major projects within the practice and prepared a number of Local Area Plans and Masterplans throughout the country.
Completed projects include The Western Environs Masterplan for Kilkenny City (120 hectares) and the Masterplan for the development of the core of the medieval city, North Limerick Regeneration Masterplan for Moyross. The Adamstown Strategic Development Zone Masterplan with South Dublin County Council. The team has prepared a Masterplan for the 200 hectare North Drogheda Environs, the Urban Design Regeneration Masterplan for Magee Barracks in Kildare, and were Urban Design Consultants on the Cork South Docks Local Area Plan team. Masterplans for large town extensions to Tullamore and Athlone are completed, and the Masterplan for a new neighbourhood in Woodbrook, Co Dublin has been finalised.
John has extensive experience in the design and delivery of Social and Affordable housing over a 25 year period with projects designed for Local Authorities in Dublin, Meath, Louth, Monaghan, Longford, Tipperary, Kerry and Sligo. Competition-winning designs for Innovative Prefabricated Social & Affordable Housing have been completed in Cherry Orchard (373 units) and Coultry in Ballymun (150 units). These schemes were part of Public Private Partnership Joint Ventures between Local Authorities and the private sector.
Private sector large-scale developments of over 2000 dwellings have been completed in Lucan, Castleknock, and John headed the team which developed the multi award winning high-density mixed-use development of 300 apartments, retail units and offices at Hanover Quay in Dublin’s South Docklands. Design work includes the Greystones Marina mixed-use Harbour Development and mixed-use developments in Dublin, Sligo and Belfast.
