Adamstown is an evolving, sustainable, twenty first century new town at the western edge of Dublin city. OMP were the co-authors of the Adamstown Special Development Zone Masterplan, which sets down statutory planning and design guidance for the delivery of a new community of 25,000 residents, and were appointed to design and deliver 405 dwellings in this first phase of housing at Adamstown Square.
Adamstown Square is one of eleven new neighbourhoods identified in the Adamstown Special Development Zone Masterplan. This housing area is located adjacent to the principle access roadway from Dublin city, Adamstown Way. Situated close to the Adamstown rail Station, the development adjoins the first of three principle education campuses proposed for Adamstown. Two primary schools and one Secondary school are now in operation as is the first Neighbourhood Centre which includes shops, a crèche and sheltered housing.
The site layout follows the principles laid down in the Masterplan. The curving edge of the site along Adamstown Way is flanked with a 4 storey terrace of duplex units and own door family houses. Behind this terrace a new housing format is proposed with the introduction of two residential squares, each enclosing a large private communal garden.
The squares include perimeter two storey family houses, each having a 7 meter deep private rear patio, with small blocks of 3 storey apartments located on the four corners . All residents of the squares have access to the landscaped communal gardens. A Home Zone is situated beside the school’s campus with pedestrian priority access and shared surface treatment along its’ entire length. It is supervised by housing on one side and flanks a landscaped Pocket Park situated at the centre of the development. The Home Zone terminates at the Creche and Neighbourhood Centre.
As with all housing in Adamstown, there is a wide selection of sizes and types of dwellings on offer in this phase of development. 3 and 4 bed family houses, 2 and 3 bed duplex units and 1 and 2 bed apartments are included in this medium density, low rise scheme. Brown and buff brick are the predominant material finishes with red cherry wood finished windows in all homes. All homes achieve a B1/Code 4 energy rating.
